In Conversation with Hallie Rubenhold: hosted by Madeleine Pelling

Monday 28 April 2025
6 – 8pm
Coram Campus, 41 Brunswick Square, London, WC1N 1AZ

Coram invites you to attend a ‘Tea and Talk’ with Hallie Rubenhold to celebrate the publication of her new book, Story of a Murder: The Wives, The Mistress and Dr Crippen.

About the speakers

Hallie Rubenhold is the bestselling and prize-winning historian and author of The Five: The Women Killed by Jack the Ripper, whose expertise lies in revealing stories of previously unknown women and episodes in history.

Story of a Murder is a grand experiment in subverting a famous history, retelling the infamous historical true-crime story of wife-murderer Dr Crippen and how he was brought to justice by an extraordinary group of music hall women.

Hallie has previously engaged with Coram’s history through the short film, ‘No Place Like Home: The Story of the Foundling Hospital’.

The conversation will be hosted by award-winning cultural historian, author and broadcaster Madeleine Pelling, whose first book brought 18th century Britain to life through the marks left behind by its ordinary inhabitants.

About the event

Touching on themes of gender, class and justice, this conversation will centre on the lives of ordinary women in Britain’s recent history and the complex ways we examine and reinterpret the past. Through deeper exploration of the individuals and experiences hidden from dominant narratives, especially women and children, this event is a unique opportunity to engage with the intersection between social history and Coram’s long-standing commitment to preserving and telling the stories of these forgotten voices.

The event will begin with refreshments and a welcome from Dr Carol Homden CBE, CEO of Coram. Following the conversation guests are invited to contribute to an audience Q&A. There will be further opportunity for questions and conversation afterwards over tea or wine.
